Species of the genus Phlox L. and their use at the Uman National University of Horticulture

Aim. Analysis of the species of the genus Phlox L. (Phlox paniculata L., P. divaricata L., and P. subulata L.), which are most widely used in the different urban settlement landscaping. Ukrainian floriculturists prefer well-known cultivars of domestic and foreign breeding mainly of these three species for growing. The novelties of cultivars and their colorful palette of colors in the creation of flowerbeds for various functional purposes are fascinating. That is why to achieve the goal, it was to investigate the origin of species of the Phlox genus and describe the cultivars of domestic and foreign breeding, and their use in landscaping. Methods. The origin of species of the genus Phlox, descriptions of some cultivars of domestic and foreign breeding, and the peculiarities of their use in floriculture were studied on scientific publications and Internet resources and generalized with the materials of our observations. The experimental part of the research was performed at the collection nursery of the University Department of Biology. Results. A brief retrospective review of the history of the genus Phlox is made. The importance of the works of the famous Ukrainian breeders of the M. M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden NАS of Ukraine, K. D. Kharchenko, and V. F. Horobets of the introduction of flower and decorative plants, in particular phlox, in the conditions of Ukraine, their wide adoption, and research in scientific and educational scientific institutions are characterized. The phlox collection of the botanical nursery of the Department of Biology of the Uman National University of Horticulture and the possibilities of using Phlox cultivars use in landscaping were studied. Conclusions. Analysis of the Phlox strange species and foreign and domestic cultivars at the collection nursery of the Department of Biology of the Uman National University of Horticulture and used in our university campus landscaping showed that they successfully perform their functions as an important component of the educational and scientific base for training horticulture specialists in the specialty in 091 Biology, 206 "Horticulture" in studying the disciplines of botany, floriculture, the introduction of plants, landscape design, urban settlement landscaping, etc.
